Pio Baroja (1872-1956) was a Basque-Spanish novelist, a central figure of Spain's 'Generation of '98' whom Hemingway openly admired. Born in San Sebastian, he wrote spare, restless fiction of Spanish life across dozens of novels. The City of the Discreet is set among the schemers and dreamers of Cordoba.
