Herman Bernstein

Herman Bernstein (1876-1935) was an American journalist, translator and diplomat, born in Vladislavov in the Russian Empire, in what is now Lithuania. He emigrated to the United States in 1893 and from about 1900 wrote for the New York Evening Post, The Nation and The Independent, later reporting from Europe for the New York Times and the New York Herald. In 1914 he founded the Yiddish daily Der Tog, which he edited until 1916. He covered the Russian Revolution and the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, and in The History of a Lie (1921) he set out the case that the Protocols of the Elders of Zion was a forgery, afterwards suing Henry Ford for libel. He was United States Minister to Albania from 1930 to 1933. His translations from Russian include Leonid Andreyev's The Seven Who Were Hanged, published in English in 1909.
