Ernest Boyd

Ernest Boyd (1887-1946) was an Irish born critic, editor and translator. Born in Dublin, he was taught by a French tutor and at schools in Germany and Switzerland, read several European languages, worked on the Irish Times from 1910 to 1913, and then entered the British consular service, with postings in Baltimore, Barcelona and Copenhagen. His Ireland's Literary Renaissance (1916) was the first full account of the Irish literary revival and remained a standard work. He left the consular service and settled in New York in 1920, writing for the New York Evening Post, advising the publisher Alfred A. Knopf, and editing The Independent, the New Freeman and the American Spectator. He also wrote Guy de Maupassant: A Biographical Study (1926). He contributed the introduction to the Harcourt, Brace edition of Ramuz's The Reign of the Evil One in 1922.
