Alfred Chamot

Alfred Edward Chamot (1854-1934) was an English translator who spent most of his life in Russia. He was an administrator of the Imperial Palace Gardens at Strelna, near St Petersburg, and left Russia with his family in 1918 after the revolution, settling in London, where he translated Russian literature into English. His version of Nikolai Leskov's Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District appeared in the collection The Sentry and Other Stories (John Lane, London, 1922), which also carried his translations of On the Edge of the World, The Sentry and The Toupee Artist, with an introduction by Edward Garnett; Knopf reissued it in New York in 1923. His daughter was the art historian and Tate curator Mary Chamot.
