Edmund Obecny

Edmund Obecny made the first English translation of Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont's novel The Comedienne (Komediantka), published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in New York and London in 1920 under the Knickerbocker Press imprint, four years before Reymont won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The novel follows a young provincial woman who leaves home to join a travelling theatre company. The 1920 edition opens with an unsigned publishers' note rather than a translator's preface, and nothing further is recorded of Obecny beyond this translation.
