Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff

Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff (1889-1930) was a Scottish translator and soldier. Born in Stirlingshire, he was educated at Winchester College and the University of Edinburgh, where he took first-class honours in Anglo-Saxon in 1914. He served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers on the Western Front from 1914 to 1917, was badly wounded in the leg at Arras in April 1917 and was awarded the Military Cross. His Beowulf appeared in 1919 and his Song of Roland soon after; he also translated Stendhal, Pirandello and the letters of Abelard and Heloise. From 1922 until his death from cancer in Rome he rendered Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu as Remembrance of Things Past, a title Proust disliked. Swann in Love is the central section of his Swann's Way (1922).
